Lufthansa Technik has achieved a significant milestone, completing its 1,000th overhaul of a Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan (GTF) engine. This accomplishment highlights the success of the company’s global collaborative network and its integral role within the worldwide GTF maintenance ecosystem.
The milestone reflects coordinated efforts across multiple international facilities. Central to this success is EME Aero in Jasionka, Poland—a joint venture between Lufthansa Technik and MTU Aero Engines. This facility has emerged as a premier GTF service center, handling everything from rapid repairs to comprehensive overhauls for engines powering Airbus A320neo, A220, and Embraer E-Jet fleets. Employing over 1,200 people and operating two test stands, EME Aero is scaling toward more than 500 annual shop visits by 2028.
In Germany, Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey (LTAA) has solidified its expertise since 2018, specializing in PW1500G engines for the A220 family. Recent capacity expansion includes a 10,000-square-meter logistics center, supporting the team’s recent celebration of its 300th engine induction.
This network-wide achievement traces its roots to Hamburg, where over seven years, approximately 200 GTF engines were overhauled. This foundational work built essential expertise and trained international teams, which formally transitioned operations to partner sites in mid-2024.
Beyond workshop overhauls, Lufthansa Technik’s Mobile Engine Services provide critical on-site support, minimizing aircraft downtime. Specialized GTF expertise is now established at strategic locations in Frankfurt, Montreal, Tulsa, and Shenzhen, ensuring responsive service for growing global fleets.
“This milestone of 1,000 engines is a powerful testament to our partnership with Pratt & Whitney,” said Derrick Siebert, Vice President Engine Services at Lufthansa Technik. “We haven’t just built up capacity: we have created a system in which each site contributes its strengths. This enables us to act flexibly as a team within our network and prove ourselves to be the reliable partner for the growing GTF fleet worldwide.”
