The National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA) is bolstering its national infrastructure strategy with the addition of seven new Bell 407GXi helicopters. Announced at the VAI Verticon 2026 conference, the acquisition represents a major investment in the company’s aviation division as it undertakes its largest construction program to date.
With a mandate to build a sustainable energy future, the NTCSA faces the dual challenge of maintaining a vast existing network while adding over 14,000 kilometers of new high-voltage lines. The incoming Bell fleet is tasked with supporting both objectives. From routine patrols to emergency response during outages, the helicopters will serve as the eyes in the sky for grid operators.
The Bell 407GXi was selected for its proven track record in demanding utility roles. It offers a unique blend of power and precision, capable of seating up to five crew members while carrying the necessary equipment for live-line maintenance and repair. Its advanced avionics suite—the Garmin G1000H NXi—enhances safety during low-altitude flying, reducing pilot workload and increasing mission effectiveness.
NTCSA CEO Monde Bala described the timing of the delivery as critical, stating that a dependable aviation service is central to the company’s ability to execute its build program while ensuring grid integrity.
Bell Textron’s leadership reinforced the strategic nature of the partnership. Tim Evans highlighted that the NTCSA is now part of a global network of utility operators that depend on the 407GXi as a multi-mission workhorse. The deal reinforces Bell’s footprint in the African market, providing a modern solution for one of the continent’s most critical energy infrastructures.
