A transatlantic industrial collaboration has resulted in a critical survivability upgrade for the Franco-German Binational Air Transport Squadron (BATS). Terma, in close partnership with Lockheed Martin, has delivered an advanced Aircraft Survivability Suite for the squadron’s fleet of C-130J-30 aircraft, enhancing protection for the joint European aircrews.

The upgrade marks the next phase in the aircraft’s defensive evolution. While the Terma Defensive Aids Controller (DAC) has managed baseline protection—integrating Missile Warning Systems and countermeasures dispensers since 2021—the new configuration adds the Leonardo Miysis Directed Infrared Countermeasure (DIRCM). The DAC now seamlessly incorporates the DIRCM’s jamming capabilities, creating a unified, automated response system capable of defeating advanced infrared missile threats. This integration showcases the DAC’s unique ability to fuse disparate technologies into a single, cohesive network.

Dan Ulrich, Vice President of Self-Protection Systems at Terma, lauded the collaboration, stating that the project was built on a “shared commitment to crew safety.” By working hand-in-hand with Lockheed Martin, the airframer, Terma ensured that the new system integrated flawlessly with the C-130J’s existing architecture, delivering a low-risk capability upgrade. This partnership approach provides the German Air Force and their French counterparts with a flexible, powerful defense solution. It underscores a united effort to equip allied forces with adaptable technology that meets the immediate need for enhanced survivability while retaining the flexibility to counter the threats of tomorrow.
