Sikorsky’s MATRIX system will bring autonomous flight to the Robinson R66 TurbineTruck.

The future of cargo transport took a significant step forward with the announcement of the R66 TURBINETRUCK, a new unmanned helicopter developed by Sikorsky and Robinson Helicopter Company. Designed to meet emerging demands for autonomous logistics, the aircraft combines the reliability of a best-selling commercial helicopter with the intelligence of a leading military-grade autonomy suite.

This new vehicle is specifically tailored for what the industry terms “the dull, dirty, and dangerous” missions. Without the need for life support systems or a cockpit, the R66 airframe has been repurposed into a dedicated cargo carrier. Its design prioritizes rapid reconfiguration and payload capacity, featuring a high-volume internal bay with a nose-loading clamshell door. This makes it exceptionally well-suited for resupplying remote outposts, delivering aid in disaster zones, or operating in environments with contested airspace.

The TURBINETRUCK is powered by Sikorsky’s MATRIX technology, which has been validated across more than 1,000 flight hours on 21 different aircraft types. This system provides a high level of operational simplicity: ground-based personnel load the cargo and input mission goals via a tablet, after which the helicopter autonomously plans its route, navigates obstacles, and completes its objective. This capability significantly reduces the risk to human crews and lowers the logistical footprint required to sustain flight operations.

Industry leaders view this as a pivotal moment for unmanned aviation. Rich Benton of Sikorsky noted that the MATRIX suite is rapidly becoming the industry standard for safe and repeatable autonomy, and that the R66 serves as a perfect complement to larger systems like the S-70 UAS U-Hawk. Robinson CEO David Smith reinforced this sentiment, stating that the TURBINETRUCK is a direct result of merging flight-proven maturity with future-focused technology. The result, he explained, is an affordable, attritable platform engineered for one specific purpose: to reliably deliver critical assets into the field, autonomously, every time.
