Boeing launches next-generation Virtual Airplane trainer.

Boeing has unveiled a new, highly flexible training platform designed to transform pilot readiness. Launched at the European Aviation Training Summit, the Virtual Airplane Procedures Trainer (VAPT) leverages the power of Microsoft Azure and Microsoft Flight Simulator to provide an immersive, accessible, and customizable training experience.

As the first application within Boeing’s broader Virtual Airplane suite, the VAPT is engineered to elevate learning and operational flexibility. It enables pilots and flight training teams to conduct realistic flight-deck practice on common devices like computers and iPads, moving crucial training out of exclusive, fixed-base simulators.

“We’re very excited about the launch of Virtual Airplane,” said Chris Raymond, Chief Executive Officer of Boeing Global Services. “This new software will significantly impact how and when pilots and operators train and will provide them with much needed flexibility. This new platform reflects Boeing’s commitment to digital innovation as we seek to leverage the latest technologies to improve our offerings and outcomes for our customers.”

The platform centers on two key innovations. First, it delivers high-fidelity 3D simulations that help standardize training, reduce the time needed to familiarize with full-scale simulators, and improve overall pilot readiness. Second, it features an intuitive authoring tool that allows training operators to create, customize, and instantly distribute procedure updates and tailored lessons across their entire pilot pool.

“The launch of Virtual Airplane underscores our commitment to pilot training and enhancing aviation safety,” said Chris Broom, vice president of Boeing Global Services, Commercial Training Solutions. “With this product, pilots can hone their skills and training operators can tailor lessons to meet individual and organizational needs.”

Microsoft emphasized the partnership’s role in advancing aviation safety through technology. “Microsoft is committed to accelerating learning while optimizing confidence for pilots with safety at the core,” said Dayan Rodriguez, Corporate Vice President, Manufacturing and Mobility at Microsoft. “Partnering with Boeing, we are advancing the future of flight by empowering the people at the heart of it.”

Initially enabled for the Boeing 737 MAX, the Virtual Airplane Procedures Trainer represents a significant step in democratizing and modernizing flight training, with plans to expand to additional Boeing aircraft models in the near future.
