Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) has finalized a comprehensive 14-year maintenance and support agreement with Lufthansa Airlines and Austrian Airlines, both key members of the Lufthansa Group. The long-term contract covers the entire fleet of 41 APS5000 auxiliary power units (APUs) installed on the airlines’ Boeing 787 Dreamliners. This strategic partnership ensures dedicated support for a critical component of the airlines’ expanding long-haul operations.
Designed specifically for the Boeing 787, the APS5000 APU provides essential electrical power when the aircraft’s main engines are off and ground power is inaccessible. A key feature is its ability to simultaneously power twin electric starters for the main engines, making it a vital asset for ensuring dispatch reliability and operational flexibility.
“This tailored maintenance plan provides our Lufthansa Group partners with cost predictability and operational stability while maximizing APU performance and extending intervals between shop visits,” said Anthony Rossi, Vice President of Customer Service at Pratt & Whitney Canada. “Our focus is on supporting their fleet availability with proven expertise.”
For the Lufthansa Group, this agreement represents a strategic investment in the future of its flagship wide-body operations. “As our 787 fleet grows to form the backbone of our long-haul network, securing reliable, efficient technical support is paramount,” stated Binoj Sebastian, Senior Director of Technical Procurement at Lufthansa Airlines. “This agreement with the OEM reflects our confidence in the APS5000 and in P&WC’s ability to deliver consistent value and excellence in support, which directly contributes to our operational success.”
The APS5000 is recognized for its advanced environmental performance, standing as the quietest APU in its class with the industry’s lowest emissions. It is a powerful unit, capable of generating 450kVA of electrical power at sea level and operating at altitudes up to 43,100 feet. With over 1,400 units produced and a combined fleet experience nearing 16 million flight hours, the APS5000 is a mature and proven system.
This agreement underscores a shared commitment between P&WC and the Lufthansa Group to leverage OEM-driven maintenance programs that balance cost control with maximum asset performance, ensuring the Dreamliner fleets remain efficient and available for service.
