First Boeing 787 cabin mod completed by Lufthansa Technik Malta.

by Editorial Staff

Lufthansa Technik Malta has achieved a strategic milestone by completing its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner cabin modification at its European Center of Excellence for widebody base maintenance. This success significantly strengthens Malta’s growing widebody service portfolio. The comprehensive upgrade included installing a new seating configuration and fully modernizing cabin monuments to enhance passenger experience and efficiency.

Boeing contracted and supported the modification package in close collaboration with operator Lufthansa. The technically demanding project required converting a bay in Malta for increased space and managing extensive logistics to replace the existing cabin. Six more similar 787 modifications are planned in Malta through the end of the year.

Marcus Motschenbacher stated that the completion is a proud moment for the entire team, demonstrating technical capabilities, reliability, and workforce dedication. He emphasized that delivering the 787 project precisely on time proves Malta’s readiness for future widebody projects. Boeing’s Lindsey Douglas noted that this collaboration expands post-delivery retrofit options for the 787 fleet, and as a Boeing Licensed Service Center, Lufthansa Technik adds essential capacity for tailored modifications. Lufthansa’s Thomas Spriesterbach highlighted the new Allegris cabin as a passenger game changer, thanking the team for a seamless installation.

To support this growth, Lufthansa Technik Malta is constructing a new 6,400-square-meter hangar, opening at the end of 2026. The facility will accommodate one widebody and three narrowbody parking spots, increasing Malta’s total to four hangars capable of servicing nearly all commercial Airbus aircraft (excluding A380) and the Boeing 787.

In 2024, Boeing designated Lufthansa Technik as the first licensed service center for 787 cabin modifications worldwide. This license enables Lufthansa Technik to design new interiors, provide engineering, handle integration per customer requirements, and cover certification. All modifications are performed at the Malta center of excellence.
