ADAS, an Airbus DS Airborne Solutions company, has marked a major achievement: the Heron 1 Uncrewed Aerial System (UAS) has reached 10,000 flight hours while supporting Frontex operations in Malta.
Under a 2025 contract renewal, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency Frontex awarded ADAS a second four-year term to deliver maritime surveillance across the Central and Eastern Mediterranean. The mission relies on the Heron 1, a medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) from ADAS’s longstanding partner, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). Turnkey services are being provided from bases in Malta and Crete.
Notably, operations from Malta over the past five years have been executed using only a single UAS—a testament to ADAS’s ability to sustain continuous flight operations under constrained resources. The program has demanded high performance in challenging conditions, including prolonged sea missions, harsh weather, and operations from a civilian international airport within controlled airspace.
” This success underlines the high reliability of the system as well as the commitment and expertise of the teams involved,” said Ralf Hastedt, ADAS Managing Director Sales and Business Development. He emphasized that the milestone reflects the professionalism of ADAS field personnel and their supporting teams.
