Action-Oriented: FAA-approved Joby aircraft takes to the skies for first flight.

by Editorial Staff

Joby Aviation has taken a decisive step toward launching commercial air taxi services, announcing the first flight of its FAA-conforming aircraft. This aircraft, built to strict FAA standards, will now undergo flight testing to secure Type Inspection Authorization (TIA)—the final technical hurdle before type certification. The timeline is aggressive: Joby pilots are conducting initial tests now, with FAA pilots scheduled to visit the Marina, CA, facility later this year to perform the official certification flights.

The company’s path to market is further accelerated by its selection for the White House-backed eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). This initiative provides a framework for Joby to begin early operations across ten states this year, spanning from California to New York. The program represents a major milestone for the U.S. air taxi industry and offers Joby a potential shortcut to proving its technology in real-world environments.

“Seeing this aircraft fly means everything to our team,” said Didier Papadopoulos, President of Aircraft OEM at Joby. “It’s the validation of years of work and marks our entry into the final phase of bringing this aircraft to market.”

To support commercial launch, Joby is rapidly scaling its manufacturing footprint. Following the expansion of its Marina facility, the company recently acquired a 700,000 square-foot site in Dayton, Ohio. This facility is central to Joby’s plan to double production to four aircraft per month by 2027, with the capacity to eventually deliver up to 500 units per year. By maintaining vertical integration—designing and building most components in-house—Joby aims to control quality and meet the growing demand expected as its air taxis approach commercial service.
