Embraer is bolstering the legendary A-29 Super Tucano’s combat IQ. The Brazilian aerospace giant has announced a strategic partnership with Valkyrie Aero to equip the light attack aircraft with “Gunslinger,” an advanced Artificial Intelligence suite designed to dominate the modern battle against unmanned aerial systems.
This collaboration directly addresses the tactical chaos caused by hostile drones. Valkyrie’s proprietary Gunslinger technology enhances the Super Tucano’s existing sensor package with real-time AI processing, dramatically improving the pilot’s ability to execute the “Find, Fix, Finish” kill chain against small, agile UAS threats. The system acts as a force multiplier, allowing the manned aircraft to process complex battlespace data faster than ever before.
While the proliferation of drone swarms has forced militaries to rely on expensive, high-end fighter jets for counter-air patrols, the A-29 offers a more sustainable method. Its turboprop design, tandem cockpit, and inherent agility make it the ideal manned platform for C-UAS operations. The Super Tucano can safely decelerate to match the speed of slow-flying one-way attack drones, transforming the aircraft into a stable, low-speed gun platform—a tactical impossibility for most jet fighters.
With over 60,000 combat flight hours to its name, the A-29 Super Tucano brings unparalleled experience to the partnership. Marcio Monteiro, Market Intelligence VP at Embraer Defense & Security, highlighted the strategic fit: “We are proud to partner with Valkyrie to further enhance the A-29’s mission capabilities. It remains the gold standard for light attack, and now, with this AI integration, it becomes the definitive manned solution for counter-drone operations.”
Valkyrie Aero views the integration as a direct response to current battlefield dynamics. “Gunslinger is born from the immediate needs of the frontline warfighter,” explained Chris Turner, Senior VP of Corporate Strategy at Valkyrie Aero. By embedding the company’s proprietary AI—developed alongside the very personnel who face drone threats daily—into the robust A-29 platform, the partnership delivers an enduring and scalable solution designed to outthink and outmaneuver the unmanned threats of today and tomorrow.
