Rheinmetall to acquire NVL, establishing a German Navy System House.

by Editorial Staff

German defence giant Rheinmetall has officially completed its acquisition of Naval Vessels Lürssen (NVL), the military shipbuilding arm of the Lürssen Group, marking a pivotal shift in the country’s maritime defence industrial base. The transaction, which secured all necessary antitrust approvals following its announcement in September 2025 and the signing of the purchase contract in October 2025, was finalized on 1 March 2026. The purchase price has not been disclosed.

This strategic move consolidates Rheinmetall’s position as a dominant force in European defence, extending its influence from land and air domains to the sea. By absorbing NVL, a renowned specialist in the design and construction of frigates, corvettes, and naval support vessels, Rheinmetall is effectively creating a national “system house” for advanced maritime capabilities. The new entity will focus on developing and manufacturing cutting-edge surface vessels for navies and coastguards, as well as pioneering autonomous maritime systems.

Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG, welcomed the integration, emphasizing its strategic importance. “We are happy about the successful finalisation of the transaction,” Papperger stated, reaffirming his earlier vision that the combination would transform Rheinmetall into a relevant player across all military domains—land, water, air, and space. He highlighted that merging the technological expertise of both companies establishes a powerful full-range supplier capable of delivering state-of-the-art vessels equipped with comprehensive system solutions. This includes not only the platforms themselves but also integrated electronics, advanced sensors, and effectors.

The acquisition comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tension, where naval power projection and the protection of sea lanes have regained critical importance. With NATO allies facing new threats, there is a surging demand for modern naval capabilities. Rheinmetall aims to meet this demand by leveraging NVL’s shipbuilding pedigree alongside its own prowess in land-based systems, digitization, and defence electronics. The merger is expected to generate mutual growth, secure a robust position in the maritime sphere for the combined group, and significantly bolster the naval defence capabilities of Germany and its allies by providing high-performance, digitally advanced solutions. The integration positions Rheinmetall to benefit from rising defence budgets across Europe, offering a unified portfolio that covers the entire spectrum of naval warfare.
