In a significant move to modernize its infantry capabilities, the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) have selected RTX’s Raytheon ELCAN to supply a specialized version of its renowned Specter DR optic. Announced on [Date of announcement, if available, otherwise remove], the contract calls for the delivery of a highly customized Specter DR 1-4x sight, developed in partnership with Leonardo Germany, as a core component of Germany’s broader soldier modernization initiative.
The new configuration is engineered to meet precise German operational requirements, enhancing soldier adaptability in dynamic combat scenarios. The primary 1-4x variable-power optic, prized for its ruggedness and clarity, will be fitted with a top-mounted Aimpoint reflex sight. This dual-system approach allows a soldier to instantly transition from magnified, mid-range engagement to a non-magnified, both-eyes-open reflex mode for close-quarters battle, eliminating the critical delay of adjusting or swapping optics.
“This award is a testament to the Specter DR’s adaptability and our commitment to supporting allied forces,” stated Chris Reimer, Business Development & Strategy Manager at Raytheon ELCAN. “We are delivering a purpose-built solution that directly addresses the German Armed Forces’ evolving operational needs, enhancing their lethality and situational awareness.”
This German order is the latest in a surge of European demand for the Specter DR platform. Since August 2024, a coalition of nations including Germany, Denmark, Lithuania, Spain, Italy, and Finland have collectively ordered over 100,000 units. The total value of these procurements has surpassed €193 million, reflecting a strong continental push toward standardizing advanced soldier systems.
The European orders are notable for their high degree of customization. Beyond the standard platform, nations are procuring sights with specialized features such as multi-band laser protection for use with advanced targeting devices, custom reticles tailored to specific ballistic calculations, unique mounting solutions, and nation-specific durable finishes. The integration of a secondary reflex sight, as seen in the German contract, has become a particularly prevalent enhancement, providing a decisive tactical edge in the fluid environments of modern warfare.
With over two decades of operational service and widespread adoption across NATO and allied militaries, the Specter DR has established itself as a trusted cornerstone of infantry small arms. This latest wave of contracts underscores its enduring relevance and Raytheon ELCAN’s role in providing mission-ready, high-performance optical systems for frontline troops.
