Embraer enhancing A-29 Super Tucano for drone countermeasures.

by Editorial Staff

Embraer has announced a significant expansion of the A-29 Super Tucano’s mission capabilities, formally introducing an effective and affordable solution for countering Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). This upgrade leverages the aircraft’s existing rugged design and integrates new technologies to address the growing global threat posed by drones in modern conflicts.

The new operational concept centers on a suite of specialized sensors and weapons. Key enhancements include specific datalinks for receiving target coordinates, an advanced Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/IR) sensor for precise tracking and laser designation, and compatible armaments like laser-guided rockets and wing-mounted .50 caliber machine guns. This package allows the turboprop aircraft to detect, track, and neutralize hostile drones efficiently.

“The continued challenges in modern warfare have shown the urgent need for solutions to fight drones,” said Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security. “The A-29 is the ideal tool to counter UAS effectively and at low cost, adding to the aircraft’s already extensive mission set.”

The A-29 Super Tucano is uniquely positioned for this role. Renowned for its ability to operate from austere, unimproved airstrips with minimal support, the aircraft brings persistent and flexible airpower to forward areas where drone threats often emerge. With over 600,000 flight hours logged globally, its proven durability and low operational costs are major advantages for air forces seeking sustainable counter-UAS options.

This new capability integrates seamlessly into the A-29’s established multi-mission portfolio, which includes close air support, armed reconnaissance, intelligence surveillance, advanced pilot training, and border patrol. The aircraft’s modern avionics, precision weapon systems, and exceptional cost-effectiveness have already led to its adoption by 22 air forces worldwide. The addition of a counter-drone role ensures the Super Tucano remains a vital and adaptable asset for national security in an evolving threat landscape.
