Cessna’s Citation Ascend receives FAA certification.

by Editorial Staff

The Cessna Citation Ascend has officially received FAA type certification, marking a significant evolution for the world’s most popular midsize jet family. Designed and built by Textron Aviation, the Ascend blends proven platform reliability with a suite of advanced new features aimed at enhancing pilot efficiency and passenger comfort.

This milestone follows a rigorous flight test program where two aircraft completed over 1,000 flight hours. Chris Hearne, Textron Aviation’s SVP of Engineering & Programs, noted the program’s success reflects the company’s commitment to integrating direct customer feedback into a jet focused on “performance, productivity and efficiency.”

For pilots, the Ascend introduces a completely new cockpit built around the Garmin G5000 avionics suite. Key features include autothrottle technology to reduce workload, three large 14-inch high-resolution displays, and advanced synthetic vision. It also boasts improved connectivity options like a cockpit satellite transceiver and optional systems for more direct oceanic routing.

Performance sees a boost from two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW545D engines, enabling a maximum speed of 441 knots and a range of up to 1,940 nautical miles. Operational ease is enhanced by an unattended auxiliary power unit (APU) that manages cabin temperature with less fuel and noise.

Inside, the cabin receives a major upgrade. A new flat-floor design—a first for the 560XL series—provides more spaciousness and flexibility, accommodating up to 12 passengers. The cabin environment is quieter, with sound levels comparable to a car on the highway. Larger windows allow 15% more natural light, and an emphasis on connectivity is evident with numerous USB ports, wireless charging, and standard high-speed Wi-Fi. Passengers can control the cabin environment wirelessly, managing lighting, shades, and entertainment.

As the latest member of a family with over 1,000 aircraft delivered, the Citation Ascend builds on a legacy of operational efficiency and mission versatility. It integrates desirable features from Textron’s larger Latitude and Longitude jets, offering customers a refined and technologically advanced midsize package. Entry into service is expected before the end of the year.
