Kazakhstan’s flag carrier, Air Astana, has signed a landmark agreement with Boeing [NYSE: BA] to purchase up to 15 new 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. This deal represents the airline’s largest-ever single airplane purchase and is a cornerstone of its strategic plan to modernize its fleet and significantly expand its international network over the next decade.

The order will dramatically increase Air Astana’s widebody capacity. When combined with three additional 787-9s to be acquired through lessors, the airline’s total commitment grows to up to 18 of the advanced jets. This fleet will directly replace its existing three Boeing 767s and provide the platform for new long-haul ambitions, including potential service to North America.

The announcement was made at the C5+1 Summit, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the diplomatic platform between the U.S. and Central Asian nations. Boeing highlighted that the order will support over 20,000 jobs across the United States.

Air Astana CEO Peter Foster positioned the 787 as central to the airline’s future. “The arrival of the first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner next year marks the start of an exciting phase of development,” he said. Foster cited the aircraft’s “customer-friendly cabin, fuel efficiency, and range flexibility” as key factors in the decision, predicting the fleet will be “an outstanding success with the airline and its discerning passengers.”

The 787-9 is renowned for its economic and passenger benefits. Its fuel efficiency and operational range make it ideal for opening new, thinner long-haul routes profitably. For travelers, its advanced cabin technology, including higher humidity and lower cabin altitude, is designed to enhance comfort on extended flights. Each of Air Astana’s new jets will be configured to seat 303 passengers across multiple classes.

This move positions Air Astana to boost connectivity from its Central Asian hub to key markets in Asia, Europe, and beyond. By joining the global community of over 100 787 operators, the airline is making a decisive investment to elevate its service, grow its capacity on existing routes, and fulfill its ambition of becoming a prominent player on the world stage.
