In a major move to launch its long-haul operations, flydubai has placed a significant order with GE Aerospace for GEnx-1B engines. The agreement, announced at the 2025 Dubai Airshow, covers 60 engines to power the carrier’s inaugural fleet of 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, plus spare engines and a comprehensive long-term services package.

This strategic partnership marks a pivotal expansion for the Dubai-based airline, established in 2008. Having grown to serve over 135 destinations, flydubai will now leverage the efficiency and range of the 787 to add intercontinental routes to its network, increasing capacity and meeting rising passenger demand.

Flydubai’s selection underscores its confidence in the GEnx engine’s proven performance. The engine family, in service since 2011, is renowned for its best-in-class fuel efficiency, durability, and reliability—attributes critical for sustainable growth in the Middle East’s demanding operating environment. Notably, the GEnx powers two-thirds of all operational Boeing 787s and is certified to operate on approved Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blends.

Ghaith Al Ghaith, Chief Executive Officer at flydubai, stated the engine’s role is integral to the airline’s expansion. “The performance and durability of our engines play an integral role… as we prepare to welcome the Boeing 787,” he said, noting the airline looks forward to a long partnership with GE Aerospace.

Russell Stokes, President and CEO of Commercial Engines and Services at GE Aerospace, responded, “We are honored by flydubai’s trust… The GEnx engines will deliver reliability, efficiency and durability to power the airline’s first widebody fleet.”

With more than 70 million flight hours accumulated and over 3,900 engines delivered or on order, the GEnx stands as GE Aerospace’s fastest-selling high-thrust engine. This deal positions GE Aerospace to support flydubai’s next chapter as it transforms into a global carrier connecting Dubai to new long-haul markets.
