Partnership expanded with longtime component maker Chromalloy.

Lufthansa Technik, in collaboration with longtime partner Chromalloy, has achieved a significant milestone in aircraft maintenance by introducing certified, cost-effective alternative components for the V2500 SelectOne engine. The partnership has developed six new turbine blade types for this popular engine, which powers Airbus A320ceo family aircraft. Two of these components—a second-stage High-Pressure Turbine (HPT) blade and a seventh-stage High-Pressure Compressor (HPC) blade—have already received full FAA certification.

These Parts Manufacturer Approval (PMA) components offer airlines a financially attractive alternative to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts. PMA parts are fully approved by aviation authorities, meeting identical safety, performance, and quality standards while providing significant cost savings. The newly certified blades are not merely theoretical; they are already in active service. Lufthansa Technik has installed them in a double-digit number of engines across the Lufthansa Group fleet, where they have collectively accumulated approximately 1,800 flight hours and over 1,100 flight cycles with excellent results.

“Initial in-service results have been very satisfactory, just as expected,” said Dr. Alexander Feuersaenger, Senior Vice President Fleet Management for the Lufthansa Group. He highlighted that the decision to adopt these PMA components followed close coordination within the group and offers a “technically sound and economically attractive alternative” with an excellent cost-performance ratio.

This development fundamentally changes the service offering for airlines. “Customers who choose Lufthansa Technik for their V2500 SelectOne engine overhauls will have a choice,” explained Thomas Boettger, Vice President Corporate Procurement at Lufthansa Technik. “They can either continue to rely on OEM parts or opt for the more cost-efficient PMA components—with identical performance and safety.”

The success extends the proven, long-standing partnership between Chromalloy and Lufthansa Technik through 2035. “This extension reflects our mutual trust and commitment to excellence,” stated Chromalloy CEO Chris Celtruda, emphasizing the company’s role as a pioneer in high-value PMA solutions.

By jointly developing and marketing these PMA parts for the V2500, the two companies are building on previous successful collaborations for other engine types, providing the global aviation market with more choice, competition, and value without compromising the industry’s stringent safety standards.
